“Le temps spectaculaire”

Video and installations by Bill Balaskas

November 28 - December 31, 2011

Consulat General de France à Thessalonique /

Institute Français de Thessalonique

In the ongoing debate about the most severe crisis in the history of the capitalist system, the revolutionary thought of Guy Debord (1931-1994) would have surely found a dynamic response, in particular, with regard to the correlation between the production of images and the accumulation of capital within a “Society of the Spectacle.” In the context of the celebrations for the 80 years since the birth of Debord, the French Cultural Institute of Thessaloniki will host an exhibition and a conference to commemorate this leading thinker of France in the 20th century. The exhibition ‘Le Temps Spectaculaire’ (‘Spectacular Time’) sets as its ultimate goal the investigation of our contemporary society through artistic means that bear strong ties with the thought of Debord, materialized through the videos and installations of contemporary artist Bill Balaskas, who lives and works in London.

The exhibition will be hosted in the gallery of the French Cultural Institute from 28 November until 31 December 2011 (2a Leoforos Stratou, Mon-Fri 10:00-13:00 & 17:00-20:00, Sat 10:00-13:00, Sunday closed, Τ. 2310 821231)
