Besik Kartlelishvili (The Fleetgroup)

THE FLEETGROUP is an artistic initiative running since the spring of 2011 by Tbilisi based artists, Vassil Macharadze, Koka Vashakidze and Bessa Kartlelishvili. Expressive research with a sharp humor for exploring the social and political mysticism in personal life of an individual is the cornerstone of THE FLEETGROUP’s vision and action: “regardless of the media we use, it is basic for us to create the art as visual as possible. We are the fleet, floating between the shores of rationality, in the ocean of irrationality.” They have participated in exhibitions, projects and residencies such as: Artisterium, 4th Tbilisi International Contemporary Art Exhibition and Art Events, Tbilisi, Georgia (2011) / Mindware, the residences program/project: A Talking City, Lublin, Poland (2011-2012) / Soviet Structures & Society Reconnection Lab, grant program of the international project Transkaukazja 2011 for site-specific art, Tbilisi, Georgia (2011) / Exhibition, Georgian-Swiss art project, Contemporary Art Space-Center Shindisi, Tbilisi, Georgia (2011).

WARNING! SHADOWS FALLING

The domino effect is a chain reaction usually understood a priori as a negative process. Regarding Greece, the cliché is even more evident. By our work we want to show that the domino effect can be a positive progress as well; also we want to send the message that there is no reason of depression or apathy and especially no reason of aggression; temporary materialistic difficulties will disappear one day and spiritual and cultural heritage of this nation will stay forever. In our work we installed almost fully destroyed Ionian columns, the symbols of Greece, “holding the roof” while they are not touching the ground and one can think they will start to fall in a second, but they are strongly upright like the ones in the Parthenon or in the stoa of the ancient agora of Thessaloniki that remain raised through the ages. The only thing that is falling from the Greek pillar is a shadow, the shadow of Hellenic culture that influences the majority of different cultures and nations all over space and time, causing the domino effect of progress in global culture, civilization, democratization and liberalization.
